Steve dedicated over 42 years to the industry, spending much of his career at Thiele Geotech from 2001 until his retirement. His expertise, leadership, and passion for innovation have left a lasting impact on the profession.
Throughout his career, Steve played a pivotal role in increasing awareness of modern concrete applications, driving innovations that improved both the acceptance and cost-effectiveness of this essential material. As Principal in Charge of Construction Management, Materials Testing, and Inspections, he led numerous high-profile projects across Nebraska and Nevada, consistently demonstrating his deep technical knowledge and forward-thinking approach.
Beyond his professional achievements, Steve has been an active leader in industry organizations, serving as President of both the APWA Nebraska Chapter and the Nebraska Chapter of the American Concrete Institute. His contributions to various committees have fostered collaboration and growth within the engineering community.
Steve’s technical innovations have set industry benchmarks, particularly in mix designs for soil cement mixtures, roller compacted concrete, and Portland cement concrete. His work has significantly influenced the quality, performance, and application of concrete in construction.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Steve has trained and guided countless engineers and technicians through courses, workshops, and his role as an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His involvement in Professional Engineer examinations and ACI certification programs has ensured that future generations of engineers continue to uphold the highest standards in the field.

About the Tom Reading Award
The Tom Reading Award is presented by the Nebraska Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to individuals who demonstrate leadership in the concrete industry. Recipients are recognized for increasing awareness and acceptance of concrete, as well as actively participating in industry activities.
The award is named in honor of Thomas J. Reading, a distinguished civil engineer born on July 15, 1915. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University in 1936 and a master’s degree from MIT in 1939. Throughout his career, Reading made significant contributions to the American Concrete Institute and the Nebraska Chapter, serving in various leadership roles and on multiple technical committees. His dedication to advancing concrete technology and education left a lasting impact on the industry.
